What is a Fire Protection Impairment?
Automatic fire protection equipment occasionally needs to be taken out of service. Usually, the outage is needed for maintenance or renovations, but unplanned events like frozen pipes or fire pump failure can also cause an outage. In each case, the fire protection system is considered impaired because it will not respond normally in the event of a fire. A fire protection impairment is a period of heightened risk that requires additional precautions and management.
Impacts on Safety and Reliability
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) records show that automatic fire protection systems are critically important to safety and business continuity. In fires where an automatic extinguishing system worked, there were:
no record of more than two deaths in a building
87% fewer worker & civilian deaths
85% lower property and business interruption losses
Despite this, the single greatest cause of failure for automatic fire protection systems is simply that they were shut off, representing three out of five failures (59%) in NFPA data!

Effortless Compliance
Because a fire protection impairment represents a heightened state of risk, many insurance providers require
policy holders to notify them when a fire protection system will be impaired and notify them again when it is
returned to service.
Save time, ensure impairments are tracked and communicated.
RiskTools allows for a reallocation of time spent doing more meaningful work across the entire team.
